Real Life Academy Needs Volunteers!

More about the event: The Real Life Academy is an interactive, hands-on, authentic experience for area high school students to learn about money management. In the fall and spring of every year, nearly 400 juniors and seniors from Altoona, Augusta, Fall Creek, Memorial, North and Regis high schools have researched and selected their careers, participated in classroom lessons on financial management, and are ready to put their financial skills to the test.

Volunteers are needed to help run the stations students visit – additional questions about how to get involved with this event please contact Casey Schumacher.

Like CPR, QPR is a simple evidence-based process that you can learn to use in your personal and professional life. Learning QPR can help save the life of someone thinking about suicide - in this session you will learn the following:

  • Spot warning signs of suicide and start a conversation with someone at risk.
  • Assist the person at risk to seek help.
  • Make a referral to a provider that can help that person professionally

Please join the Eau Claire Area Chamber of Commerce and Peoples Bank Midwest for a presentation by Terry Fitzgerald, Vice President and Senior Economist in the Research Division of the Federal Reserve.  

Terry J. Fitzgerald is a vice president and senior economist in the Research Division of the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis. He leads the Economic Analysis Group which conducts policy-oriented research and produces a wide range of economic and policy analysis for senior bank management, the board of directors, the Federal Reserve System, and the public. Terry also coordinates policy activities across the Research Division, including support for FOMC briefings, Presidential speeches and essays, and other policy activities and Research initiatives. His research focuses on the national economy and has appeared in professional journals and in publications of the Federal Reserve Banks of Chicago, Cleveland, and Minneapolis. He has served as a keynote speaker for a range of business, government, nonprofit, and public groups. 
 
Terry has 25 years of experience with the Federal Reserve. He worked at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis while attending graduate school at the University of Minnesota. He rejoined the Bank as a visiting scholar in 2001 and as a full-time economist in 2006 before being promoted to assistant vice president in 2009 and to vice president in 2012. Prior to returning to Minneapolis, Terry served as a research economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland and as a professor of economics at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota. Terry holds a B.S. in economics from the University of Iowa and a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Minnesota.

How City Finances Really Work

With the City of Eau Claire in the midst of considering its 2020 operating budget, Finance Director Jay Winzenz will join us to provide clarity on how city finances work and what goes into creating a balanced budget.  He will talk about anticipated expenses, revenue sources and how issues like levy limits, Tax Increment Financing and other components impact the city's ability to deliver services.  He will also provide an explanation of the four-year Capital Improvement Plan that was adopted by the city council in July.

Downtown Transit Center Design Meeting

Planning is underway for a new city bus transfer center at 410 S. Farwell St. and city officials are looking for input on its prospective facilities and features.

Eau Claire Transit and design firm LHB, Inc., will be at the Chamber for a stakeholder meeting on Thursday, October 17, at 10:00 a.m. There will be a brief presentation followed by Q&A and discussion. The City of Eau Claire was awarded a $5 million US DOT TIGER grant as part of the funding for the center, and plans include building parking and workforce housing as part of the structure. No pre-registration is required and anyone interested is encouraged to attend.
