Eau Claire Receives Kaboom! Playful City USA Designation Award
Thanks to the work of one of our Leadership Eau Claire™ teams, Eau Claire was recently designated as a Playful City USA, which is designed to honor cities and towns that are taking action to ensure that kids in their communities, particularly kids from low-income families, get the balanced and active play they need to thrive. The group worked with the Children's Museum of Eau Claire and other community organizations to achieve this designation, which will offer the community increased access to areas of play, ideas for free play and family activities, exclusive access to a policy map, increased stature and advantages for state and national grant opportunities, and leadership collaboration tools. Chippewa Valley Family has agreed to host the map of play and feature resources and perspectives about the importance of play.
To kick-off the #pledgetoplayEC campaign and celebrate the Playful City USA designation, the Leadership Eau Claire™ group, Visit Eau Claire and Chippewa Valley Family have received special permission from Eau Claire Parks and Recreation to chalk the parks with a hopscotch game and #pledgetoplayEC. Visit Eau Claire's mEAU (mobile Eau Claire) will plan playful events throughout Eau Claire. Chippewa Valley Family will promote those family fun activities and events. Park users are encouraged to use the hashtag and share their family-friendly photos. In support of this designation, private businesses and schools are invited to request a hopscotch stencil to be chalk painted on their property.
Congratulations to members of the Leadership Eau Claire™ Gold Team, which include Jay Brettingen of Charter Bank, Teva Dekel of Williams Diamonds, Latacia Greeley of WESTconsin Credit Union, Monica Obrycki of Eau Claire Energy Cooperative, Carmen Peterson of Eau Claire YMCA, Phil Recheck of the Children's Museum of Eau Claire, Anna Sizer of Mayo Clinic Health System and JJ Smieja of Realityworks.
For more information about the Leadership Eau Claire™ program, please visit the Chamber's website. Application deadline for next year's class is June 1.

Member Forum: Budget Impacts and the Future of Higher Education:
Q&A with UWEC Chancellor James Schmidt
Monday, June 6, 2 - 3:30 p.m.
Royal Credit Union, 200 Riverfront Terrace
For Chamber members only.
No charge to attend, but RSVP requested
UW System campuses are in the midst of absorbing reductions in funding from the 2015-17 state budget. At UW Eau Claire, that's a $7.7 million operating fund reduction, leading to a workforce cut of 179 full time positions, 197 fewer class sections offered this spring compared to last year, and a 14% increase in average class size.
At this Forum for Chamber members, UWEC Chancellor James Schmidt has promised "straight talk" about what the University is doing to handle its budget challenges while maintaining its quality and meeting the growing workforce needs of our region. The Chancellor will also discuss the pros and cons of the tuition freeze, and will answer questions about what can be done to improve and strengthen the system.
There is no charge to attend, but advance registration is requested. More details to follow.
