April 2016 Board Highlights

Chamber President, Bob McCoy, executed his option to extend his employment for 2017, expiring on December 31, 2017.

The Chamber has hired Chelsea Erickson as the new Graphic Designer/Staff Assistant, effective May 16, 2016. She will replace Abby Filcher, who is moving to the Twin Cities area. We welcome Chelsea and wish Abby the best in Minnesota. The Chamber has hired Peter Hienz, who will be a senior at UWEC as the Legislative Intern for the next school year.

Discussed the cuts to the UWEC system and what effect it could have for the future. The Chamber will schedule a forum for Chamber members to hear from Chancellor Jim Schmidt about the impact and what he is hoping the business community can do to assist with encouraging the legislators to not make further cuts. More details will be in The Update once a date/location are set.

More and more women are recognizing the value of golf as a networking tool. Join us for our annual Women's Golf Workshop for a fun, interactive afternoon that will provide you with everything you need to know to empower you to get out of the office and do business on the golf course instead!

Agenda

1 p.m. - Welcome and Introductions

PGA Golf Professional Jim Buyze of Wild Ridge Golf Course will give a few pointers on the basics, such as what to wear, how to behave, what clubs to use and what other golfers will expect from you.

1:30 p.m. - Rules of Golf
Heidi Olson of Automated Financial Solutions will lead participants in an interactive activity to explain the Rules of Golf. Olson is a former women's regional affairs manager for the United States Golf Association and former head rules official for the Division 1 NCAA Women's Golf Championships.

Working Mothers Luncheon

Wednesday, May 11, Noon - 1:30 p.m.
Eau Claire Golf & Country Club
828 Clubview Drive, Altoona
Cost to attend: $25

Sponsored by: Associated Bank, Dove Healthcare, Group Health Cooperative of Eau Claire, HSHS Sacred Heart & St. Joseph's hospitals, REALiving and Weld Riley, S.C.

Join us for our fourth annual Working Mothers Luncheon! This is a unique opportunity for working moms to gather to address the challenges they face in today's business environment. Soon-to-be mothers and those who are planning for motherhood someday in the near future also are encouraged to attend. Fathers and other caregivers are welcome.

During lunch, attendees will have the chance to network and gain practical ideas and advice from other working mothers to help balance work/life experiences in an informal, brainstorming atmosphere.

Then, if you have ever felt overwhelmed, taken advantage of or enmeshed in drama, then our keynote speakers are just for you! Have you ever wondered how boundaries, balance and motherhood impact your happiness? Are you always trying to reach the seemingly unobtainable status of "Superwoman"?

First, Dori Pulse will take you through a condensed presentation of how healthy boundaries impact everyday life. Our second keynote speaker, April Marion, will describe her journey through the muddled waters of motherhood, how it has impacted her happiness and the true meaning of superwoman.

About the Speakers
Pulse is an author, speaker, blogger and free-lance writer. She has also facilitated several Christian programs including the Divorce Care program at her local church since 2008. Her remarriage in 1998 resulted in a stepfamily, causing her to realize the need for support and information for couples within a stepfamily.

Marion is a full-time staff accountant with Biesterveld & Spies, LLC, a certified public accounting firm in Eau Claire. She plays the role of employee, wife, mother, daughter, sister, friend, homemaker, cook, avid gardener and the list continues. Even though she plays various roles each and every day, she knows that none of them are done best unless she is HAPPY!

Eggs & Issues: Eau Claire Area School District Finances

Friday, May 20, 7 - 8:30 a.m.
Eau Claire Chamber of Commerce
PESI Conference Room
$20 per person for Chamber members

Sponsored by:

As the state's eight largest school district, Eau Claire faces a variety of financial challenges including statutory revenue caps; an outdated state school funding formula; the need to retain highly-qualified staff; and funding facility maintenance, safety and technology needs, all while fulfilling its primary purpose to educate students for today's workforce. With a projected deficit of nearly $4 million, the school board must decide this summer whether to take a referendum to the district's voters this fall. At this edition of Eggs & Issues, you'll get an update on the district's financial picture from Superintendent Mary Ann Hardebeck and members of the Board of Education, and have the opportunity to ask questions about the district's financial options and potential referendum asks.

Other Information

Construction Starts Monday on 30th Avenue in Lake Hallie

The Village of Lake Hallie will begin reconstruction of 30th Avenue between County Highway OO and 118th Street on Monday, April 25. The project will involve removal of the current pavement, followed by grading and asphalt paving on the approximately quarter-mile stretch of roadway a short distance west of Business 53.

The road will be open during construction. Minor delays are to be expected as traffic will periodically be reduced to a single lane, with traffic flow controlled by flaggers. The 30th Avenue project is separate from the Business 53 reconstruction project that is expected to get under way this summer, and the two projects will not affect each other. The 30th Avenue project is scheduled to be completed by mid-July.
