Hacking and IT security has become such a regular news item that many business people are becoming numb to it, instead concluding that there is little they can do to protect their businesses, a concept known in the IT security industry as 'breach fatigue." However, while the large company and state-sponsored breaches are the focus of the news, small and midsize businesses are still the most targeted by hackers because they are the easiest prey. To protect your business, you must first understand the nature of the threat, then how to combat it.

In this presentation, you will learn who is doing the hacking, how it works, recent issues and trends facing small businesses in our area and reasonable steps to take to provide a high level of deterrence to hackers coming after your business. This presentation is designed for business leaders who do not have an IT background and promises to be entertaining and provide practical advice that can be put into action quickly.

Federal Tax Reform Update

Achieving comprehensive federal tax reform has been a top priority of the business community because of the need to simplify the tax code and climb out of what have been historically low levels of growth in the economy.

The US House of Representatives took the initial action last week when it passed the first tax reform legislation in 31 years. It simplifies the code by reducing deductions but lowering tax rates and increasing the standard deduction.

The next step is the US Senate. A Tax Foundation analysis of the proposal being considered by the Senate Finance Committee found that it would: Increase the size of the economy by 3.7 percent, improve wages by 2.9 percent, create nearly 1 million new jobs, increase the average growth in the economy by nearly 0.4 percent relative to growth in the absence of the tax plan, and provide more than $1.2 trillion of additional revenue for the federal government from positive economic effects. The same analysis estimates a gain in after-tax income of $2,632 for a typical Wisconsin middle-income family.

If you are interested in weighing in on tax reform and its potential impact on your business, contact Wisconsin's Senators at:

Senator Ron Johnson (202) 224-5323
Senator Tammy Baldwin (202) 224-5653

You can follow the progress of tax reform through Congress at this US Chamber link.
